EMDR Therapy
What is EMDR Therapy and how can it help me?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy designed to help people heal from trauma and emotional distress. It works by helping the brain reprocess distressing memories, so they no longer feel overwhelming.
Instead of talking in detail about painful memories, EMDR works by helping your brain process and release the stuck feelings connected to them. While you focus on a specific memory, your therapist will guide you through simple back-and-forth movements — like eye movements, tapping, or sounds (bilateral stimulation). This allows your brain to reprocess the memory in a way that feels safer and less distressing.
Reprocessing trauma for emotional healing
EMDR stimulation is believed to mirror the natural processes of the brain during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, a stage of sleep that plays a crucial role in memory consolidation and emotional regulation.
The therapy focuses on reprocessing traumatic memories, reducing their emotional charge, and transforming negative beliefs into healthier, more empowering thoughts. Through this process, individuals can experience a significant reduction in emotional distress, allowing them to move forward in their healing journey.
Many people find that EMDR helps them feel more in control, less triggered, and more at peace, often more quickly than traditional talk therapy.
